Became a NYC taxi driver during college and continued for a couple of years afterward, putting my degree in religion to good use. This naturally led me to elementary school teaching, and, a few years later, to high school English and history. Have lived abroad with my wife Suzanne for half my adult years, in Budapest, New Delhi, Karachi, Gangtok (where's that?!), Tokyo, and Moscow.

My wife of 42 years, Suzanne, is a retired early childhood teacher. Two kids (no longer kids), one who got married last week. I was the officiant, which let me say lovely things about the couple and marriage.

My friendships with Gerry Pemberton and Keith Slaughter, which isn't exactly a school memory. But it's the truth.

I loved Ms. Raissa Landor. I remember that the English Dept. distrusted Ms. Landor's Great Books course, which I (of course, fledgling nerd that I was) adored. So we demonstrated--more like performed--a seminar before a jury of skeptical English teachers, in some amphitheater-like space at New Trier West. I actually remember a) the poem we read and b) the opening question Ms. Landor asked. I also remember that Ed Zwick sat across from me in class, presumably before he became famous. He was quiet.
