Doug Mccain's death should have been prevented.  It is a shame that we all witnessed the events that led to his tragic death.  RIP

Joe—I agree with you that if we knew then what we know now, Doug’s death could well have been prevented.  We lived in a different society in 1968—one in which a lot of things including suicide were talked about in hushed tones, and its warning signs were routinely ignored.  I didn’t know Doug well, but he and I were in the same history class, and anyone who knew him at all was profoundly impacted by his death.  I’ve thought about him often over the years.

Fast forward to 1990--our eldest daughter mentioned at the dinner table one evening that she had made friends with a guy in her history class; his name was Doug McCain.  I was stunned, but nevertheless, recognized and seized the opportunity to talk about "my" Doug McCain and discuss at length, suicide, warning signs, and intervention options.  As it turns out, his short life was not a waste.

Doug, you made me laugh when you were in Lagniappe, and I remember thinking you really found a niche on stage.  You seemed happy and involved.  I can't tell you how often I thought of you, especially while my kids were attending a pressure cooker "affluent" high school.  Rest in peace.
