In Memoriam

John Charles Guyot

From John's sister, Suzy Lyman:

Dear Pals,

I will attempt to make this short~ not a strong suit of mine :)

Over the last few years you have been so so so very kind to not only inquire, but offer thoughtful suggestions, hope and prayers (and so much more) for my brother John. This past week, John contracted pneumonia, took a sudden irreversible turn for the worse, and died early this morning in a hospice center in Cleveland. His wife Barbara and two children were with him.

As some of you know, I flew out last Tuesday for my goodbye. As I flew back in over Chicago, the plane went right over Rush Hospital (specifically: the Bowman Center) where my mom has been for the past month. I share the story because in the vein of 'there is always more out there/forces at work that we don't know about' ~ my mom (really not cognizant of John's condition) is in the very spot where she delivered her first baby--John. Full circle to coin a phrase..and in perhaps an unusual way, comforting.

The ups, downs, and challenges have been rather daunting at times- most particularly in the last two years as mom has also headed a bit downhill, but made so very much easier by the unequaled, untiring, selfless gift of your friendship~ (and the incredible arrival of Tom Lyman--how lucky am I). I can only hope to be half as supportive and kind as a friend in return.

Ok..so it is a little staggering to lose the moniker of 'little sister'--in ways I can't even describe. And to be honest-- I lived up to that roll in a marvelously annoying way (as some of you can attest). But I have the greatest in 'family' with such wonderful friendships, and am deeply, forever grateful.

oxox,

suzy

I was so sorry to learn of John's passing. My heart goes out to all of you in this time of great sadness. My fondest memory of John was when he played Alfred P. Doolittle in New Trier High School's production of My Fair Lady. He was fantastic! What a talented guy. God Bless you all.

Dear Suzy -

I wish I'd known your Mom was at Bowman Center - I was just at Rush yesterday (getting six stitches in a finger I sliced trying to cut fennel...so NOT a cook) and would have loved to check in on her.

Anyway - deepest condolences to you on the loss of John. I actually don't remember him complaining about you ALL that much back when we were all still living in Winnetka/Chicago; and I know, from Onnie, that as his (exemplary) sister, you have suffered his illnesses along with him, Barbara and his children, in what I am certain was a greatly comforting and constructive way for all of them.

I'll always remember John (pre-illness) as a heck of a fun-loving, creative, uncensored and funny guy. And I hope you will understand that, though I wish the end of your brother's life could have been more joyful (for him as well as for you), I am, indeed, glad he is done suffering, and at rest.

Affectionately,

Patty McMillen
