Michael R. Cuttie, 38, vice president of Janet Schirn Associates Inc. and an instructor in interior design at Columbia College, was noted for his talents as well as his social concerns. He was president of the Marya Lilian Foundation for the Advancement of Interior Design.

A resident of Lake View, he died Sunday in St. Joseph Hospital, West Bend, Wis.

In the ``Look at the `90s`` exhibit by national authorities in art, fashion, architecture and interior design held at Navy Pier, Mr. Cuttie exhibited an exquisite $4,200 gilt shellback chair in the Regency style next to an orange crate. He said he was making a statement about the disparity of our times.

Northwestern University; the University of Lille in France; and the University of San Francisco in Valencia, Spain. He graduated from the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts.

Mr. Cuttie served on the board of the Illinois chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID). He was also editor of the group`s newsletter.

He was awarded the ASID Presidential Citation, its Outstanding Young Member Award and Education and Distinguished Service Awards.

``Concerned with today`s homeless and those whom our communities ignore and abuse, Michael gave freely of his abilities and talents to make life easier for others,`` said ASID Illinois chapter president Betty Jo Purvis.

Survivors include his father, Donald; a sister; and a brother.

Services for Mr. Cuttie will be held at 3 p.m. Dec. 11 at the Glencoe Union Church, 263 Park Ave., Glencoe.
