I found this report card when I was packing things for my upcoming move to Evanston. My dad saved all my school stuff. After he passed away in 2005, his wife shipped his papers to me. A virtual time machine.

I was having a terrible year. This report was for 3rd quarter. I pulled out all stops 4th quarter and turned in my poetry notebook for an 'A'! So I did graduate on schedule. Mrs. Pink took me aside and asked "Who wrote that poetry notebook for you?" Of all the tacky, lousy things to say to a student. And from the chairman of the English dept, no less. And that's not the least of it. Miss goody goody pony tail student sitting next to me was given an A+ on her effort. I knocked myself out and took the hill, and still I get beaten out.

Truth be told, and I have to be honest even if I come across disprespectful. I thought Pink's class was hokey. She read an obscene passage from a paperback aloud - twice, just I think for the thrill of using the F-word in public under the cover of "educating." There I was only 17, but rolling my eyes; even then I could see what was going on. A teacher trying to be hip, cutting edge. We went dowstairs to watch a movie; I forget what it was. And I chatted with Mr. Pink, her husband. He asked if I had seen Easy Rider. I answered negative, and he rolled his eyes. But guess what. Still today, I have not seen Easy Rider and am not interested. I don't know why that is. I liked Clint Eastwood's "Gran Torino" and his "Million dollar Baby" films. Terrific movies. But I could never sit through any of Quentin Tarantino's stuff. Again, I never saw the point of it. Just like Mrs. Pink's English class!

I saved about 100 of these starting in 1969. Maybe you remember some of these songs. I have met most of the WLS DJs - the late Yvonne Daniels, Tommy Edwards, Brant Miller, Bob Sirott - and recently had my picture taken with Dick Biondi at the Elvis fest at Mother's. A genuinely great guy. The real deal. I thanked him for "being there" when I needed him during those teen years. Brant Miller is cool, too. Currently does weather on channel 5.

I have since learned that Mr. Barefield had been diagnosed with leukemia. He was in the hospital at the time of his passing.

I had Richard Farwell for Algebra. I got a 'B' in semester 1 - most likely I was tense that first semester and more attentive. I always remember him peering over our shoulders as we took one of his Algebra tests. He hovered over mine for what seemed an eternity as I was stuck. He interjected "how many times have I told you to start by removing the fractions!" I took his advice and everything fell into place. Now - this is good teaching, turning a test into a learning experience rather than a demoralizing intrument of torture. Farwell had the habit of addressing each student as "Mr." or as "Miss." The formality and implied adulthood could also be taken as sarcasm if you hadn't been following the homework.

I only got 'C's in Mr. Barefield's Geometry class, but that was purely my own fault. Geometry is really not difficult - looking back.

Mr. Barefield was the most patient math teacher - his kindness and teaching ability touched me and I have thought of him often through the years. He was a great man who made a difference in a lot of lives.

Class of '70 reunion missing contact

I now have to plead either old age or plain old stupidity. I had such a great time at the reunion but I was unable to get all of the contaxct details I wanted. Having looked through the papers I brought home I have lost the name, location, contact of a guy with whom I had a very pleasant conversation and asked him to email me. If he did it never got here. All I can tell you is that he is working in Oceanography in Colorado and I have a paper I want to email him on the disappearance of the North Atlantic Current. This is the first place I am asking. I have looked at the names and the faces in Echoes, checked the list and came up with 0. I cannot plead the effects of alcohol as sadly I had little to nothing to drink at the time! Any help appreciated. NTE obviously. very much appreciate your assistance - Peter

Passing of Morris Barefield, Math Teacher

It was made known to me Sunday that Morris Barefield, my Geometry teacher at NTE 1967-68 has passed away. I was in contact with Mr. Barefield throughout the 1980s as a friend. I remember him as a soft-spoken, pleasant man who taught at a comfortable pace for learning. One of the better teachers at NTE, I will miss him.

I too wish to thank ALL of you reunion committee workers! Everything was awesome. I truly believe the website made it more exciting to come join the reunion. It was impressive and to be honest a true example of how talented our 1970 class is. Many, many thanks Jane White Ward.

As one member of the committee, I can state that we were happy to do it and glad despite the change of venue, that everyone appeared to be having a great time.

Maybe everyone will reach out to "missing" classmates and next time we will have more than 50% located?

Reunion committee needs your help

We're up to 465 located (counting the deceased) which is only 1/3 of the combined NTW & NTE classes.
